What are the New Common Core State Standards for Math?

The Common Core State Standards (CCSS) are a set of educational criteria shared by 45 states and the District of Columbia that are designed to ensure that all students in grades K-12 are working to fulfill the same expectations. The resulting set of standards were developed through a collaborative effort between the Council of Chief State School Officers and the National Governors Association, together with educators, content specialists, researchers, community groups, and national organizations.

Teachers, administrators, parents and students all can look to the Common Core to understand what skills must be mastered at each grade level. The standards also present tools and strategies to help gauge student progress throughout the course of instruction, so that instruction can be differentiated or modified as needed, to best help students meet grade-level requirements.

The CCSS focuses on two primary areas of instruction: language and math. Specifically, the Common Core State Standards Initiative has published the Common Core State Standards for English Language Arts & Literacy in History/Social Studies, Science, and Technical Subjects (CCSSE/L) and Common Core State Standards for Mathematics (CCSSM).

A detailed overview of the CCSSM is available online, and can help educators, parents and students better understand the expectations for math mastery at each grade level.

Workbooks and mobile applications that focus on developing fundamental math skills, such as multiplication, can be useful both inside and outside of the classroom to help ensure that students successfully meet the CCSS requirements to progress to the next grade level.
